The eruption could soon be over
Volcanic activity in Holuhraun has decreased in February and could be over in a few weeks or months. According to volcanologist Magnús Tumi Guðmundsson it is hard to predict exactly when it will end. The eruption could end very suddenly or decrease steadily.
"This is not a major eruption any more," says Guðmundsson. "It is very likely that it will be over before the summer."
Seismic activity in the Bárðarbunga caldera has also decreased. The largest earthquake measured in the last 24 hours was 4,3 and a total of 30 earthquakes were noted.
