Large Mudslide in North Iceland: Video

Vala Hafstað

A large mudslide occurred in Hleiðargarðsfjall mountain, near the farm Gilsá 2 in Eyjafjörður, North Iceland, at about 11 am yesterday.

No one was injured, but the mudslide came to a halt only 100 m (329 ft) from the farmhouse. Birgir H. Arason, farmer at nearby Gullbrekka 2, witnessed the mudslide and recorded the video above.

He describes the noise as enormous.

“I was working in the cowshed when I heard this loud noise,” Birgir tells mbl.is. At first, he thought a car was approaching, then he thought it was an aircraft. “But the noise was so enormous, and then I noticed the huge mudslide approaching.”

The mountain has an elevation of 1,024 m (3,400 ft), and the mudslide is believed to have started at an elevation of 850 m and covered 1.5-1.7 km. Luckily, neither people nor livestock were in its path.
