Blizzard Forecast for Large Part of Iceland

The Icelandic Met Office has issued weather alerts for a large part of Iceland today.

For Faxaflói, West Iceland, a yellow weather alert will be in effect from 2 pm until midnight. That does not include the capital area. A northwest blizzard is forecast with showers or sleet. Poor driving conditions are expected, and residents are advised to secure their neighborhood.

For Breiðafjörður bay, West Iceland, a yellow weather alert is in effect today until 4 pm with a northerly blizzard, to be followed by another blizzard tomorrow, between 11 am and 3 pm. The weather will be the worst there tomorrow between 3 pm and 11 pm, when an orange warning goes into effect with a northwesterly severe blizzard. Travel is not advised during that time.

In the West Fjords, a northerly blizzard is expected this afternoon, between 2 pm and 6 pm. Snow or sleet and difficult driving conditions are expected. That will be followed by an orange weather alert tomorrow, from 10 am until 8 pm, when a northwest severe blizzard is expected with considerable snow. No travel is advised.

In Northwest Iceland, a yellow weather alert takes effect tomorrow at 8 am through 9 pm, A blizzard is expected with considerable snow and poor driving conditions. The same goes for Northeast Iceland from 6 am tomorrow until 2 pm tomorrow, as well as for the central highlands tomorrow, from 10 am till 6 pm.
