Magma has reached the surface in Geldingadalir in the Reykjanes peninsula. For the first time since last September, when lava stopped running from Fagradalsfjall,  the tension has given a way for the magma to burst through. The eruption started at 13:18 PM today.

Einar Hjörleifsson, a specialist in Natural hazards with the Met Office, confirmed that there had been a volcanic eruption in a 100 m crack down Merardalir by Fagranesfjall.

The Met Office is now looking into the matter and putting adequate protocol in play.

The eruption can be clearly seen on mbl.is webcam in the area.

Here is the live webcam from the area.
