Iceland has highest rate of children born out of wedlock than anywhere else in Europe

Only 28.8 percent of children were born in wedlock in Iceland in 2017. This is reported by the Iceland bureau of statistics. Just over 58 percent of children were born to cohabiting couples and 14.8 percent were born out of wedlock or cohabiting parents.
The country in second place to Iceland for children born out of wedlock is France, somewhat surprisingly with 59.7 of children born out of wedlock and then Slovenia and Bulgaria. Almost no children are born out of wedlock in Turkey or Greece.
Women's fertility in Iceland is however going down and has never been so low. Fertility was measured at 1.71 children per woman. Women are also older first time mothers in Iceland with an average of 27.8 years.
