The National Commissioner of the Icelandic Police, in collaboration with the District Commissioners in the West Fjords, Northwest Iceland and Northeast Iceland, has decided to raise the uncertainty phase to alert phase, due to extreme weather.

The alert phase applies to the Strandir region of the West Fjords, Northwest Iceland and Northeast Iceland. A red weather warning is in effect for all these areas. The warning was recently raised to red in Northeast Iceland.

The storm will rage until tomorrow morning and perhaps longer. There are power outages in several areas in the northern half of the country. Travel advisories are in effect and many roads are closed. Please follow the weather forecast on en.vedur.is and road conditions on road.is.

Alert phase:
If a hazard assessment indicates increased threat, immediate measures must be taken to ensure the safety and security of those who are exposed in the area. This is done by increasing the preparedness of emergency- and security services in the area and by taking preventive measures, such as restrictions, closures, evacuations and the relocation of inhabitants. This level is also characterized by public information, advice and warning messages.
