Body of Teenager Found in River

The body of the teenage boy, who fell into a river in North Iceland on Wednesday night, has been found, mbl.is reports. Rescue workers found his body in the river today.

His name was Leif Magnus Grétarsson Thisland. He was 16 years old, born in Norway in 2003. He was a resident of Vestmannaeyjar islands.

Shortly after noon, the crew of an Icelandic Coast Guard helicopter reported that a body had been found in Núpá river in Sölvadalur valley, by Fossgil. The body is believed to be that of Leif Magnus. His relatives were notified, as was the Norwegian Embassy in Iceland.

Just before 3 pm, police were told that the body had been recovered from the river. It was subsequently transported to Akureyri by helicopter.

The chief of police in Northeast Iceland expresses her gratitude to all first responders who took part in the search under very difficult circumstances.
