A total of 99 new domestic cases of COVID-19 were confirmed in Iceland yesterday, mbl.is reports, quoting Jóhann K. Jóhannsson, media representative for the Department of Civil Protection and Emergency Management. Of the people diagnosed yesterday, 55 were in quarantine. Official figures are updated at 11 am every morning on covid.is

This is the highest number of new confirmed cases in Iceland since April 1 when the same number of people were diagnosed. Only once since COVID-19 first spread to Iceland has the number of new confirmed cases been higher. That was March 24, when 106 new cases were confirmed.

The latest figures represent an increase of 40 cases from the previous day.

Stricter rules regarding disease prevention took effect in Iceland yesterday, but authorities are presently at a meeting, discussing whether to take even stricter measures.

UPDATE:

The latest figures on covid.is confirm the number of cases reported above. The number of people already in quarantine when diagnosed has been corrected. At present, 15 people are in the hospital with COVID-19, four of them in intensive care. There are a total of 747 active cases of the disease in the country, and 3,571 people are in quarantine. The 14-day incidence of the disease per 100,000 people stands at 180, including cases confirmed at the border.
