Rescue teams all over the country are now on standby because the first snowstorm is forecast for Sunday and supposed to last until Monday morning.

An orange alert has been issued for Strandir and the North west, Nort east, East to Glettingur and to the highland  for Sunday. A yellow alert is for other parts of the country.

The forecast is that the storm will start in the Westfjords and go over the country to the East.

Karen Ósk Lárusdóttir, project manager for the Rescue team Landsbjörg, says that officials of rescue teams nationwide had a meeting with the Met Office.

Rescue teams will be on alert and ready to act in the case of necessity. However, no specific other plans are in place.

A meteorologist at the Met Office says that it is likely that all transport will be affected by the weather on Sunday. People are advised to stay at home on Sunday and keep outdoor transport to the minimum after Saturday and until Monday.
