Most have been released from hospital

Oddur Árnason, the chief of police for the South Iceland Police, believes that most of the people involved in the car accident on Suðurlandsvegur road at Öldulón, east of Fagurhólsmýri yesterday have been released from hospital. None of the victims are in critical condition.

The accident occurred when two cars coming from the opposite direction collided. Six foreign tourists were in the SUV, including a Spanish driver, and three Icelanders were in a passenger car. Six were taken to Landspítali hospital by Coast Guard helicopters and three with TF-Sif the Coast Guard airplane.

The two cars were severely damaged, Árnason said.

An investigation is ongoing into the circumstances of the accident, but the there was a sleet of ice covering the road and the conditions for driving quite dangerous.
