The town of Akranes has offered the municipality of Hvalfjörður even wider cooperation after the municipality rejected the change of municipal boundaries in connection with the town’s acquisition of the land of Akrakot farm in Hvalfjörður. It also requested negotiations on the acquisition or exchange of part of the land of Akrakot to be able to to make a direct connection from the town into Akrakot’s land.

The town also calls on Hvalfjörður municipality to “open up constructive” discussions on the matter and give residents the opportunity to express their views.

In October, it was revealed that Akranes had bought the land and planned a low-rise settlement of special estates that would surround the Akranes golf course.

Really surprised

In an announcement from Akranes it is reported that Hvalfjörður municipal council has ruled out talks with the town and confirmed this by a protocol in December.

“This was a big surprise, especially in light of the high level of cooperation between the municipalities. The municipal council members of Hvalfjörður received data from the town of Akranes about the importance of this territory for the development of Akranes in good agreement with Hvalfjörður municipality. A common structure in this area should be sufficient for the next decade,” the announcement reads.

Beneficial to both municipalities

With a new letter, the town has offered Hvalfjörður municipality even broader cooperation in 10 points, including possible road connections from the highway and cooperation on the development of a kindergarten that would serve the settlement of Akranes and Hvalfjörður.

“With this request, we are considering the long-term development of the municipality, which is of major importance to us. We hope that the municipality of Hvalfjörður will reconsider its previous decision of December and open a conversation with us for the benefit of the residents of both municipalities. We consider it our duty to use local resources properly and the cooperation of the municipalities in that regard is especially important,” says Sævar Freyr Þráinsson, mayor of Akraneskaupstaður.
