A rescue team from Höfn assisted two Dutch tourists down from Mount Ketilaugarfjall yesterday.

A request for help came from the tourists who had hiked to Ketilaugarfjall, which is beyond Nesjar, just outside of Höfn in Hornafjörður, as is reported in an announcement by Landsbjörg Rescue Team.

The tourists had parked their car at the Nesjar sales hall and walked from there, but they did not take the usual route.

After hiking quite far up the mountain, they entered an area of hard snow and sleet, and they saw they could not go any further and sought help.

Not equipped for winter mountain tours

The rescue team from Höfn went to the site and headed for the mountain, but at first the location of the tourists was not precise.

The men were found high in the mountain just before 17 o’clock. Rescue workers put spikes on their shoes and secured them in a line and followed them down from the mountain.

The men were not in bad shape after this ordeal but they were not equipped adequately for winter mountain tours. Operations were completed just before 18 o’clock.
