Consensus on the Register of Damages

The Member States of the Council of Europe intend to establish a Register of damages to document the wartime damages caused by Russia through the invasion of Ukraine.
In his speech to the summit yesterday, French President Emmanuel Macron, called on all countries to participate and to actively contribute to filling it out .
The responsibility for Ukraine and the Council of Europe's fundamental values are the main topics of the European Council. Today's meeting was marked by a great consensus among leaders on the damage register.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said the register would play a key role in punishing Russia and in "making them take responsibility for the war crimes they have committed."
The damage register is important for the future
European Commissioner Ursula von der Leyen said the register would play an important role in diverting Russia from committing more war crimes, saying it was vital for the future. Only justice could be the basis for lasting peace in Ukraine.
Prime Minister Katrín Jakobsdóttir told mbl.is earlier today that the preparations relating to the register have been successful. She believes the register is a key element in order to ensure that the Russians take responsibility.
A number of heads of state have signed the register. Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausda shared a photo of himself signing the damage register last night.
