The Blue Lagoon reopened this morning. All operational units of the lagoon, which are open to day-goers, will open in the morning, but both hotels will be closed until Tuesday.

“We will have limited opening hours into the week and will open the Blue Lagoon and the restaurants [Lava, Spa Restaurant and Blue Café] and Retreat Spa,” Helga Árnadóttir, Director of Sales, Operations and Services at the Blue Lagoon, told mbl.is.

The two hotels, Silica and Retreat, will, by contrast, remain closed, although the plan is to open on Tuesday.

Opened the day before the eruption

The Police in Suðurnes  announced on Thursday night that the Blue Lagoon could resume operations in accordance with the company's safety requirements and in accordance with the civil protection requirements.

This was announced after the new hazard assessment map was issued by the Icelandic Met Office, which showed that there was “some” danger in the Svartsengi area, but it was considered to be less than before.

The lagoon was closed on November 9. Part of the operation was opened on Sunday December 17 but the following day a volcanic eruption began at the Sundhnúkagígar crater row and the lagoon was closed again on December 19.
