A new bill proposed by Þórhildur Sunna Ævarsdóttir, MP for the Pirate Party, supported by the Alliance Party, Middle Party and People's Party proposes the lowering of VAT for tampons and other menstrual products and birth control.

If the bill goes through at parliament, menstrual  products such as tampons, cups and sanitary pads as well as all types of birth control will have a VAT of 11 percent instead of the current 24 percent.

The aim of the bill is to improve public health in Iceland and to make these products available for everyone, no matter what their income.
