The Bláfjöll Ski Area opened for the season on Saturday . Not all 14 lifts were running, though, partly due to damage sustained in the severe winter storm last week, mbl.is reports. The plan is for the area to be open between 2 pm and 9 pm on weekdays and 10 am-5 pm on weekends.

Before heading out there, please check the area’s website . The decision was just made to close the area for the day, due to strong wind gusts.

About 800 skiers and snowboarders visited the area on Saturday – a cold and windy day that saw temperatures as low as 9° Celsius (16° F).

There is snow in the forecast for the area on Friday, which is good news for skiers. As usual, the plan is for the Skálafell Ski Area to open February 1, Magnús Árnason, CEO of the ski areas in the vicinity of Reykjavík, tells Morgunblaðið .

In Akureyri, North Iceland, Guðmundur Karl Jónsson, director of the Hlíðarfjall Ski Area, states that this week, it should be clear how soon the area will open. Despite the large amount of snow in North Iceland, Hlíðarfjall mountain has not received its fair share.

In Ísafjörður, the West Fjords, the ski area opened on Friday, last week.
