Islamists using Icelandic domain name

Website linked to the terrorist organisation Islamic State, which has taken over large areas in Syria and Iraq by brutal military force, uses an Icelandic domain name it emerged yesterday. It also turned out that the website was hosted in Iceland as well.

The domain name is Khilafah.is but "khilafah" means a caliphate which the IS claims to have established in the areas it controls. The domain extension .is probably appeals to the organisation for obvious reasons.

The hosting company Advania decided yesterday to stop providing hosting service to the website due to violation of its terms after realising its content. The website was hosted at its servers through a third party. The website has since been relocated in Latvia through a hosting company based in Sweden. It still uses the Icelandic domain name.

The Ministry of the Interior was notified yesterday and the matter is currently under investigation according to a spokesperson. An MP for the Left Green Movement, Ögmundur Jónasson, wants the Icelandic parliament to take actions through legislation to prevent such incidents to take place in the future.
